چکیده

A self-circulation system is presented for a self-refueling insect-mountable biofuel cell (BFC) using trehalose, the main sugar of insect hemolymph. The maximum power density of 10.5 μW/cm was obtained from cockroach hemolymph (CHL) with added trehalase and mutarotase. The electrodes were protected by a dialysis membrane to prevent decrease of open-circuit voltage by adsorption of proteins in the CHL. Furthermore, a melody integrated circuit (IC) was driven by five BFCs connected in series. The self-circulation system was developed using abdominal motion and connected to a cockroach with a tube and a check-valve.

A Model to Study the Phenotypic Changes of Insect Cell Transfection by Copepod Super Green Fluorescent Protein (cop-GFP) in Baculovirus Expression System

Background: Baculovirus expression system is one of the most attractive and powerful eukaryotic expression systems for the production of recombinant proteins. The presence of a biomarker is required to monitor transfection efficiency or protein expression levels in insect cells. Methods: The aim of this study was to construct a baculovirus expression vector encoding a copepod super green fluore...

Modeling Insect-Repellent Use for Chikungunya Disease Prevention Among US-Caribbean Travelers

Introduction: This study examined the relationship between specific psychosocial variables and the use of insect repellents on skin or clothing as a preventive behavior for Chikungunya fever among US travelers to Caribbean destinations. Methods: A cross-sectional retrospective online survey method was adopted. US residents who travelled to one of 34 Carib...

Insect hemocytes and their role in immunity.

The innate immune system of insects is divided into humoral and cellular defense responses. Humoral defenses include antimicrobial peptides, the cascades that regulate coagulation and melanization of hemolymph, and the production of reactive intermediates of oxygen and nitrogen. Cellular defenses refer to hemocyte-mediated responses like phagocytosis and encapsulation. In this review, we discus...

Magnetic Resonance Microscopy of Flows and Compressions of the Circulatory, Respiratory, and Digestive Systems in Pupae of the Tobacco Hornworm, Manduca sexta

Circulatory, respiratory, and digestive motions in Manduca sexta pupae were observed using proton-density weighted and fast-imaging with steady-state free procession magnetic resonance microscopy. Proton-density weighted images clearly differentiated pupal air sacs from the hemolymph and organs because, as expected, the air sacs appeared dark in these images. Steady-state free procession imagin...

Kinetic effect of silkworm hemolymph on the delayed host cell death in an insect cell-baculovirus system

The kinetic effect of silkworm hemolymph on host cell viability during a baculovirus-induced insect cell death process was investigated. Host cell viability after viral infection is important for replication of the baculovirus DNA containing a recombinant gene and expression of the cloned gene. The baculovirus-induced insect cell death process can be divided into a delay phase and a first-order...
